The Upside Down Sailor, by Roxana Panufnik and Richard Stilgoe, is a music theatre production based on the story of Tony Bullimore, the solo, round-the-world yachtsman whose boat capsized. The production shows the emotions and turmoil that Bullimore went through during this time.
Within a small team I produced visuals that would accompany the narrators, live orchestra and dancers. Through our visuals we tried to reflect the emotions described by the narrator, as well as create an atmosphere to reflect the story. We used unconventional methods to create our visuals; with water scenes filmed in a small fish tank, balloon pumps to create bubbles, mirrored card to abstract visuals and many more experimental techniques. Using QLab to queue up our visuals, we performed them live during the performance so that all the visuals matched the music as perfectly as possible.
